On February 12, 2026, the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) conducted an advocacy visit to the Mandate Secretary, Dr. Adebayo Benjamin-Laniyi. The aim was to enhance the disability-inclusive response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and improve referral systems within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The engagement focused on several key objectives:
- Strengthening institutional collaboration
- Securing commitment for disability-inclusive interventions
- Improving coordination of GBV referral services in the FCT
We were warmly welcomed by the Mandate Secretary, who recognized JONAPWD’s ongoing efforts and offered valuable insights into developing structured coordination mechanisms to bolster effective service delivery across the FCT. This meeting marks a significant step forward, reflecting an increasing institutional commitment to creating disability-inclusive GBV systems and fostering stronger multi-sector collaboration.
A vital takeaway from our discussion was the importance of functional partnerships and responsive stakeholders. Effective GBV referral systems depend on the intentional integration of disability inclusion at every level.
Together, we are making strides toward ensuring that women and girls with disabilities in the FCT have access to safe, responsive, and inclusive GBV services.
