On the 30th of November 2023, JONAPWD hosted an event in recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), celebrated annually on December 3. This year’s theme was “Advancing Post-Moratorium Agenda of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018,” emphasizing the importance of advancing the rights of persons with disabilities in Nigeria, particularly in light of the upcoming moratorium deadline for the enforcement of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act.

The meeting aimed to assess inclusive policy-driven adaptations in national development agenda, foster accountability mechanisms for realizing the rights of persons with disabilities, and strengthen partnerships among stakeholders, including Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), civil society groups, and private sector actors.


The event attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including:
Chairman, House Committee on Disability Matters, Persons with Disabilities(NCPWD)-Senior Special Assistant to the President of the -Executive Secretary, National Commission for Governance Adviser, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office
Discussions centered on the achievements made in disability rights in Nigeria, including the signing of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act in 2018 and the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Participants emphasized the need for sustained efforts to enforce the rights enshrined in the legislation and to address ongoing challenges faced by persons with disabilities in accessing services and opportunities.


The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between government bodies, civil society, and the private sector to create an inclusive environment for all.
JONAPWD, in partnership with the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room (NCSSR) and supported by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), successfully convened this important meeting. The event served as a platform to amplify voices, share successes, and strategize on the way forward to ensure the rights of persons with disabilities are respected, protected, and fulfilled in Nigeria.The commitment to a rights-based approach remains strong, as stakeholders continue to work towards a more inclusive society for persons with disabilities.
