Gift Watchful is a remarkable beneficiary of the Disability Rights Fund (DRF) and Disability Rights Advocacy Fund (DRAF) Holding Rights, Leading for Rights project for women and young women with disabilities in Nigeria. This transformative program has empowered women across 11 states, enabling them to embrace their identities and advocate for their rights.

Before joining the mentorship program, Gift struggled with confidence and often hesitated to attend events. While she had a flicker of self-belief, it was through the support and guidance of her mentor, Ada Tari Iniruo, that she began to see new possibilities for herself.

As the mentorship program commenced, Gift learned to take pride in her disability. She discovered the strength that comes from self-acceptance and recognized the importance of being a visible advocate. Public speaking, once a daunting task for her, became a powerful platform to share her voice and experiences. Gift realized that engaging in political discourse about rights and representation was not only possible but essential.

Throughout the program, Gift participated in advocacy visits to female lawmakers, which were both eye-opening and empowering. Encouraged by these experiences, she decided to join a political party and became a card-carrying member. This decision was driven by her desire to improve the standards of living for persons with disabilities in her state, focusing on advocacy without seeking personal gains.

A turning point in Gift’s journey came when her mentor asked her to represent her at a program organized by the Nigerian Women Trust Fund. Gift approached this opportunity with determination, and her impressive performance at the event caught the attention of the organizers, leading to her inclusion in their group. This recognition further solidified her commitment to advocacy and community engagement.

Today, Gift stands as a proud advocate for women and young women with disabilities. The mentorship program has transformed her outlook on life and inspired her to help others in similar situations. She is now equipped with the confidence and skills necessary to champion the rights of individuals with disabilities, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are met. Gift Watchful’s journey of change continues, and she is excited to be part of a movement that celebrates diversity and empowers all individuals.
