Applying for social protection should be simple, independent, and accessible to everyone.
When digital enrollment platforms are not designed to work with screen readers and assistive technologies, persons with visual impairments are forced to rely on others just to complete basic application forms. What should be a private and straightforward process becomes a barrier.
This undermines independence, dignity, and equal access to essential services.
Nigeria’s National Social Protection Policy (NSPP) calls for inclusive systems that ensure vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, can benefit from social protection programmes.
Similarly, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) emphasizes accessibility (Article 9) and equal access to information and services for persons with disabilities.
Digital innovation should expand access not create new barriers.
Accessible platforms mean:
- Screen-reader compatible forms
- Clearly labeled fields and simple navigation
- Compatibility with assistive technologies
Inclusion must be built into digital systems from the start.
