The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) flagged off its civil society-led campaign for transparency and
accountability in the delivery of inclusive universal basic education in Nigeria through a “market place” exhibition at a ceremony organized by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to commemorate the 2014 International Day of Persons with Disabilities held on the 3rd December, at the NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja.
The theme for the 2014 IDPWD celebration is “Sustainable Development:
The Promise of Technology.”
JONAPWD’s Project Exhibition sub-theme is “DEPLOYING TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE INCLUSIVE BASIC EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES.”
At its exhibition stand, JONAPWD displayed its project branded banners, and distributed about 1400 IEC materials comprising of hand flyers, stickers, T-shirts and Face-caps. The IEC materials contained the exhibition theme and advocacy messages to promote inclusive basic education.
JONAPWD also kick-started its Citizens’ Signature Support Campaign for Inclusive Universal Basic Education with the collection of over 200 signatures of participants at the event which included senior officials of Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, philanthropists, private business organizations, CSOs, the Media, Parents of children with disabilities, Disabled People’s Organizations, as well as persons with disabilities. JONAPWD intend to invite all Signatories through their respective Emails to its Facebook, Twitter and Youtube channels, while keeping them in touch with its project activities through periodic short text messages.
The JONAPWD National President, some members of JONAPWD Executive Board, children with disabilities and a cross section of participants had series of photo sessions during the exhibition. Photos and video shots taken at this event will be shared through JONAPWD’s website, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube channels.
JONAPWD’s National President granted series of media interviews during the exhibition. The climax of the day’s event was a Media Appearance
by JONAPWD’s National President and a member of the Project Team, Dr. Adebayo on a one-hour Online Radio Audience Phone-in programme at
Amplified Radio in Utako, Abuja, to discuss the relevance of the IDPWD celebrations and the JONAPWD project on inclusive basic education. Please access the link through; www.amplifiedradio.net
Participants, particularly those who signed the Citizens’ Campaign Sheet expressed their satisfaction with JONAPWD’s initiative on inclusive basic education and pledged their support.
It is expected that this marketplace exhibition, the distribution of IEC materials, the conduct of Citizens’ Signature Campaign, the substantial media coverage and the sharing of stories through JONAPWD’s social media networks will help to raise reasonable level of public and stakeholder awareness and interest on the project and the issues of inclusive basic education
