In our ongoing commitment to highlight change-makers in the disability rights movement, we proudly spotlight two inspiring leaders: Maimunatu Salihu Usman and Assistant Commandant Falilat Bello.
Meet Maimunatu Salihu Usman, a passionate disability rights advocate and member of the JONAPWD Sokoto State Chapter. As the Focal Person/Desk Officer of the Disability Support Unit at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Maimunatu has been at the forefront of driving disability inclusion within the university. Through her tireless efforts, she has created a comprehensive database of students with disabilities, ensuring their details are updated on the JONAPWD Count database. She also established the Association of Persons with Disabilities on campus, a vital network where students can connect, support one another, and champion their rights. As the focal person, she ensures that the needs of students with disabilities are heard and met by university management, ranging from accessibility to academic support. Maimunatu’s work is about more than advocacy; it’s about creating systems that empower students with disabilities to thrive. She reminds us that inclusion is a matter of rights, dignity, and equity.

Spotlight on Leadership: Assistant Commandant Falilat Bello is another dedicated advocate making significant strides in Sokoto State. As a passionate officer, she works tirelessly for disability rights, gender equality, and the fight against human trafficking. AC Falilat has been instrumental in promoting disability inclusion across the state, ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind in opportunities. She champions their representation and stands firmly to defend their rights when cases of abuse or discrimination arise. Additionally, she has trained fellow officers on disability rights, equipping them with the tools to advocate for inclusive justice. After participating in JONAPWD’s two-part training on disability inclusion, she has effectively put her knowledge into action, advancing the rights and protections of persons with disabilities in Sokoto State. Her leadership embodies the truth that inclusion is strongest when embedded in systems of protection and justice, helping to shape a safer and more inclusive future for all.
Let us celebrate the unwavering commitment of Maimunatu and Assistant Commandant Falilat Bello as they work tirelessly to create a world where persons with disabilities can live with dignity, protection, and equal opportunity. Together, we can amplify the voices of young advocates and build a more inclusive society.
