Location: Adamawa, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Kaduna, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers.
II. Organizational Context
Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) is the umbrella organization of persons (OPD) with disabilities in Nigeria. We largely exist as a civil coalition of organizations which brings together the key umbrella organizations of persons with disabilities (across their diversities) in Nigeria. We are a full-fledged member of the Disabled People’s International (DPI), Commonwealth Disabled People’s Forum (CDPF) and the West Africa Federation of the Disabled (WAFOD). We are also a member of Rehabilitation International and the International Disability Alliance (IDA), a global network working to empower persons with disabilities and provide sustainable solutions for a more inclusive society through the comity of the Nigerian OPDs and Organisation for Persons with Disabilities (OfPDs). JONAPWD is on the on the board of the African Disability Forum (ADF), composed of broad representatives which bring together continental, sub-regional and national organizations of persons with disabilities in Africa.
JONAPWD Program Areas:
Since 1992, JONAPWD has championed strategic engagements toward assuring the rights of persons with disabilities in Nigeria, one of which led to the passage of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Acts of 2018. Our thematic activities are consistently geared towards improving the lives of all groups (men, women, youth and children with disabilities) and their meaningful and sustainable participation under these thematic areas: Education, Health, Governance and Elections, Agriculture, Economy, Poverty Eradication, Climate, Environment and Energy, Trade, Industry and Investment, Sports and Human Rights amongst others
III. About the programme
JONAPWD has been awarded a grant under the “We Can Work (WCW)” programme in line with the economic empowerment strategy of Light for the World with funding from Mastercard Foundation. The We Can Work programme is a regional signature disability program that uses a system and mindset change approach to impact the lives of at least 1,000,000 young women and men with disabilities and enables them to access dignified and fulfilling work. The program works with umbrella Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and Entrepreneurship Hubs in Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria.
Under strategic partnerships, the programme will effect change disability mainstreaming at organisational levels. At the centre of this change, young persons with disabilities will act as disability mainstreaming agents and provide disability inclusion advisory services.
Throughout the period of this engagement, the strategic role of young women and men with disabilities on the programme will be to around:
- engaging system actors and communities through positive and empowering messaging around disability mainstreaming frameworks and inclusion;
- driving co-creation processes to inform inclusive programme development, implementation and monitoring ;
- developing agency of young women and men with disabilities through the We Can Work Academy; and amplifying voices of young persons with disabilities.
JONAPWD therefore seeks applications of self-driven young persons with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 35 years to support the implementation process of the WCW programme in Nigeria.
IV. Summary of Key Functions and Deliverables
Networking: Represent WCW programme to initiate and build relationships with both mainstream and disability organisations, in order to promote disability inclusion and to initiate partnerships with organisations interested in disability mainstreaming
Advising and training: Coordinate learning sessions and working groups to bring organisations together in learning platforms; and develop and deliver trainings and workshops on the inclusion of young persons with disabilities in development programming, workplaces and policies. Provide coaching and advise on the same.
Consolidate and further expand the pool of Disability Inclusion Facilitators: In close collaboration with the Disability Inclusion Advisory Unit, and the rest of the We Can Work programme team, provide training and support to a growing pool of Disability Inclusion Facilitators; Support them with preparation, implementation and reporting on their training and other professional activities; Ensure continuous quality and consistency of all the activities of the pool of Disability Inclusion Facilitators by monitoring and facilitation of continuous learning and refresher trainings.
Training material and tool development: Lead and provide input to co-creation processes, building on principles of human centred design; to provide content to training manuals and tools; Pro-actively identify the need for additional training materials and tools, and support the development of those.
Knowledge and information management: Gather and disseminate relevant information regarding disability mainstreaming; To document lessons learned, case studies and stories of change.
V. Expected Results
- Enhanced frameworks to ensure that young persons with disabilities benefit from policy reforms, workplace systems, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
- Strengthened national data systems to support inclusive economic development across all regions.
Expanded public support for raising awareness and deepening understanding of disability inclusion, with a focus on youth and gender-related dimensions.
VII. DIF Profiling
Language Requirements: Fluency in English.
Educational Requirements: Required Skills and Qualifications: Educational Level (Minimum of Diploma) in social sciences and related studies. S(he) must have passionate about disability inclusion and JONAPWD mission. This must be aligned with good communication skills, strong writing, oral and listening abilities.
